The National Museum-Reserve "The Battle for Kyiv in 1943" is a state cultural, educational, and research institution of military-historical profile, whose main tasks are the preservation, acquisition, study, and use of monuments of Ukrainian history during the period of the Great Patriotic War, and the coverage of the events of the Kyiv Strategic Offensive Operation in 1943.

The idea of creating the museum-reserve "The Battlefield for Kyiv" in Novi Petrivtsi village, Kyiv region, was embodied in the Resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine on March 20, 1945, №425.

Trenches of the Lyutezh Bridgehead
Immortalizing the memory of the heroic deeds of Soviet soldiers, the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR, by its resolution of May 5, 1945, №592, declared part of the territory of the former command observation post of the headquarters of the 1st Ukrainian Front, from which the troops were controlled during the Kyiv Offensive Operation (November 1943), a state reserve.

Today, the preserved territory of the museum-reserve, covering 9.2 hectares, features the field fortifications of the former command and observation post of the 1st Ukrainian Front's headquarters. These unique monuments of the Great Patriotic War include bunkers and observation posts used by the army commander General N.F. Vatutin, commander of the 38th Army General-Colonel K.S. Moskalenko, and commander of the 3rd Guards Tank Army Lieutenant-General of Tank Forces P.S. Rybalko, as well as 420 meters of communication trenches.

In 1958, by the decision of the USSR government, a monument-museum dedicated to the liberation of Kyiv was built on the reserve's territory (project authors - architects A.M. Miletsky, V.V. Baklanov, and sculptor I.G. Pershudchev). The monumental architectural composition of the monument-museum, constructed on a high mound, features a tall pedestal in the form of an anti-tank grenade topped with a sculpture of a soldier, symbolizing the victorious offensive of the Soviet troops. Beneath his feet lies a shattered fascist swastika and standards. The soldier's offensive surge is directed towards Kyiv - in the direction of the main strike force of the 1st Ukrainian Front.

What an irony, the Moscow killers of Soviet times made a monument to themselves for the "liberation" of the territory of Ukraine, which never belonged to them.

In honor of the 35th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, on May 4, 1980, the diorama «Battle for Kyiv. Lyutezh bridgehead. 1943» was solemnly opened in the Holy Intercession Church in the center of Novi Petrovtsi village (1975-1978, author People's Artist of Russia, Honored Artist of Ukraine N.S. Prisekin). In 1993, the diorama was moved to a new museum building, opened on November 5th, built on the reserve territory. Today, the diorama is a monumental monument to the heroism of Soviet soldiers who forced the Dnieper and liberated the capital of Ukraine and serves as an artistic and ideological dominant, the compositional center of the museum's exposition.

In the main building of the museum, with an area of 1100 m2 (project author - Honored Architect of Ukraine Nikolai Feschenko), there are halls of the stationary exposition «Battle for Kiev», the diorama, and the temporary exhibition hall. Priority in the exposition is given to the military theme, the contribution of all branches of the 1st Ukrainian Front and partisans in the liberation of Kiev.

In the open-air exhibition on the main alley near the museum-diorama building, there are examples of military equipment from the times of the Great Patriotic War. Among them are the T-34 tank, the reactive artillery combat vehicle (BM-13), the 37-mm automatic anti-aircraft gun (61-K), the 40-mm "Bofors" gun (USA), the ZIS-3, ZIS-2 guns, the 152-mm howitzer-gun (ML-20) and others. In this exhibition, visitors can not only examine museum exhibits but also touch them and even imagine themselves as anti-aircraft gunners, artillerymen, or tank drivers, trying to control the equipment.

The museum-reserve complex includes several monuments at the sites of the Great Patriotic War battles. In particular, the Memorial Complex in the center of Novi Petrovtsi village – the Memorial Sign «To the Heroes of the Lyutezh Bridgehead» (authors V.V. Klimik, Yu.I. Kolesnikov, S.I. Voitsekhovsky, Yu.I. Turchaninov, and others) and the Eternal Flame – built in 1983 in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Battle for the Dnieper and the liberation of Kyiv from German-fascist invaders. On the memorial plaques of the complex, the names of about 1,000 soldiers and commanders who died in the battles at the Lyutezh Bridgehead are immortalized.

In the early 1970s, at the initiative of veteran organizations, a Memory Park was founded on the territory of the museum-reserve. The park's flora includes 70 species of rare trees and shrubs brought from the dendrological parks «Sofiyivka» (Uman city) and «Alexandria» (Bila Tserkva city).

To mark the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Kyiv from German fascist invaders, three memorial signs were unveiled in Novi Petrovtsi at the initiative of the museum-reserve: one for Army General N.V. Vatutin; another for I.N. Tsitsishvili, a Hero of the Soviet Union, under whose command the soldiers of the 268th separate engineering battalion built a 360-meter bridge across the Dnieper in just a few days in early October 1943; and the last one on the building of Novopetrovskaya School No. 2, where a meeting was held during which the command of the 1st Ukrainian Front received an order to liberate Kyiv from German fascist invaders.
