Belt wrestling / Alysh
Belt wrestling, also known in Ukraine as Alysh, is a traditional form of wrestling in which two opponents try to take each other down or force the other out of a designated area by grabbing onto a belt or cloth worn around their waist. The main objective of the sport is to gain control over the opponent by using their strength, technique, and leverage. Belt wrestling is practiced in various forms across different cultures and regions, often with slight variations in rules and techniques. It is a popular folk wrestling style in many countries, including Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and some parts of Africa.
The history of Alysh or belt wrestling in Kievan Rus as a martial art is described in a separate material.
